Daniel Green took his oath of office as the new Jerseyville Chief of Police on Tuesday, Sept. 30, after the Jerseyville City Council accepted Chief Brad Blackorby’s retirement letter.
Mayor Kevin Stork presented Blackorby’s letter addressed to the mayor, city commissioners and citizens of Jerseyville, which expressed his gratitude to the city and the community.
“After more than 30 years of dedicated service to the City of Jersey, including the past 21 years as Chief of Police, I am formally announcing my retirement,” the letter read. “This decision comes with deep reflection and sincere gratitude. It’s been an honor of a lifetime to serve this community, to protect its citizens and lead the exceptional men and women of the Jerseyville Police Department. I am proud of the work we’ve done together and the commitment shown by our officers and telecommunicators, both past and present. Working alongside such dedicated and selfless professionals has been one of the greatest privileges of my life.”
In his letter, Blackorby expressed his gratitude to all the mayors he worked with as well as his former police chiefs for their leadership, support and mentorship which he carried with him during his time as chief.
“Jerseyville is more than a city where I work. It is where I built a life and raised a family. The community support has meant the world to me. From the kind words to shared goals, the people of Jerseyville have helped me shape the positive and collaborative environment that makes this city a wonderful place to live and work,” the letter read.
Blackorby also thanked his family and friends for their patience and love throughout his career.
Mayor Stork said it’s hard to express all the appreciation to individuals who have dedicated decades of service to the city. Noting that while council members come and go, people like Blackorby remain a constant in the community.
“It’s a big commitment to the city and it doesn’t go unnoticed,” he said. “I just want to say thank you for all those years and thank you for all the past councils that you worked with.”
The transition and appointment of Sergeant Green to Chief of Police was announced in August following a selection committee’s interviews with six internal candidates.
“Danny Green, a Jerseyville native and an 18-year veteran of the Jerseyville Police Department, was unanimously selected for his exemplary record in community policing, K-9 policing, and leadership as a Sergeant. His deep-rooted understanding of our community’s needs, coupled with his strategic vision for public safety, made him the standout choice,” a press release from the city stated in August.
“I was born and raised in Jerseyville, and I’m proud to now be raising my own family here. It has been an honor to serve this community as a police officer, and I look forward to continuing that service in this expanded role as Police Chief,” Green stated in the release.
After taking his oath as Chief of Police, Chief Green’s first bit of business was to handle some radio traffic and called in for Blackorby’s final 10-42, which played for everyone in the council chambers to hear.
“Attention all units, this is the final 10-42 for Chief Brad Blackorby. After over 30 years of dedicated service, Chief Blackorby has completed his final tour of duty and is now 10-42. Your leadership, courage and unwavering commitment to this department and our community will never be forgotten. You’ve led from the front, stood by your officers and served with honor, integrity and heart. Chief, we thank you for your service, your sacrifice, your mentorship and your years of selfless service. Your watch has ended but your legacy will continue on in every badge you helped shape,” could be heard over the radio.
