Area farmers have been blessed with ideal weather for harvesting their soybean crops the past week and the harvest should be about 85 percent completed by the end of this week. Yields have been above average, with many producing 40 to 50 bushels per acre, Bud Ridings, manager of the Jersey County Grain Co., said. The perfect weather and no shortage of barges have enabled the farmers to get their beans to the elevators at a record early date, Ridings said. Prices have been depressed by the harvest-time pressure, with prices $5.04 per bushel Tuesday afternoon this week. About 40 percent of the beans are going into storage with the balance being sold or applied on contracts previously sold, Ridings said. It is too early in the harvest season to assess the corn crop or yield.

A local Hardin business is about ready to open its doors in its new location. Papa’s Pizza will do just that on Friday, Oct. 13, on Water Street, south of the Hardin Village Hall. Owner Ed Hazelwonder attended the Hardin Village Board of Trustees meeting to request two parking spaces behind the village hall designated as handicapped. These spaces would be located next to the end of his handicapped ramp. That way, people can get out of their vehicles and go right up the ramp and nobody will block them. He also asked that a “No Parking” sign be placed where Joe and Bev Bowers’ old driveway would also have to have a yellow stripe. The two handicapped parking spaces were approved and the concrete stops will be painted blue with signs installed.
