The Carrollton Lady Hawks and the Calhoun Lady Warriors squared off in the Greenfield Regional last Friday in an exciting three game match that saw Carrollton win the first set and Calhoun the second. It all came down to the third set with both sides hoping to come out on top. In the end, however, Calhoun came out on top. Carrollton won the first set 25-23 with Calhoun taking the second and third sets 25-17 to win the Regional and move on to the Sectionals.
The Lady Hawks came out with a 25-23 win in the first set, but Calhoun took control in the next two sets to take the win.
“We played tough with them, but just let it slip through our fingers,” Calhoun Head Coach Melissa Zipprich said. “The girls were able to rebound in the second set, taking control and winning 25-17. We definitely had the momentum on our side.”
Zipprich said the third set started a little shaky, but they were able to change momentum and come out ahead.
Senior libber Leila Schultz led on the defensive end for the Warriors, and Annie Wilson led with 11 kills and served 19 points, including a nine-point run in the third set.
“Our defense played an amazing game and made some unbelievable saves for us, led by our senior libero Leila Schulte. After last year’s accident which prevented her from playing postseason she is back and stronger than ever,” Zipprich said. “These girls have been in the shadow of last year’s team all season. I’m so proud of them stepping out and getting this win. They played hard and progressed all season. They deserve this spotlight.”
