The Calhoun Warriors battled the Brown County Hornets in the semi-final State playoff Saturday but fell a bit short losing a heartbreaking 14-13 to end their season with a 12-1 record. The game would remain scoreless until the third quarter when Calhoun scored. Brown County answered with a touchdown, but the two-point conversion failed, giving the Warriors a 7-6 advantage. Things were looking good until about 4 minutes left in the game when the Warriors turned over the ball which the Hornets capitalized on scoring a touchdown making the score 14-7 with a successful two-point conversion. The Warriors continued to battle scoring a touchdown on a fourth-down conversion with just 15.2 seconds left in the fourth quarter, but the extra point was blocked and a penalty called against Brown County for roughing the kicker. The Warriors decided to go for two and the attempt was thwarted by the Hornets giving them the ball with less than 15 seconds left. The onside kick was unsuccessful and the Hornets went on to win the game 14-13.

“You are a special group of guys and you have nothing to hang your heads about. What we accomplished this year with you five seniors was tremendous. You all showed great leadership. I am so proud of how hard you all worked,” Coach Elmore told the Warriors. (Diane Brangenberg/River County News)
