Grafton Art Gallery hosting “Mutualism” exhibit this Friday

“Mutualism” is an exhibition of works by St. Louis-based artist Sarah Knight. Knight’s practice questions if all matter is queer in a state of transformation, and their focus on natural systems and networks has led them to create paintings, ceramic sculptures, and translucent porcelain luminaries that combine lichenous textures, biomorphic forms, and the patterns of roots and veins.
The works in this show address the idea that mutualism, a symbiotic process in which all parties benefit, can help form connections between human and non-human beings even in the age of ecological devastation. The works in this show illustrate that through the lens of queerness, or the idea that everything follows a path of natural self-identification and fluidity, both nature and human ecologies can reunite themselves into a stronger community for survival. The idea of mutualism offers a model of care in a time of political upheaval, oppression, and disconnection.
