Greenfield native Chris Weller overwhelmingly won the Republican nomination for sheriff in Greene County over his two opponents from the North Greene area.
All three candidates are currently members of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department. Weller received 1,305 votes or 55.23 percent, while Cale Hoesman received 704 votes, 29.79 percent and Clark A. Wallis received 354 votes or 14.98 percent of the votes.
Weller will now square off in November against Ben Picou, who ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination.
There were two Republican candidates vying for Greene County Treasurer and one on the Democratic side. Phil Warren, who was appointed last year to fill out the remaining term of Kirby Ballard, narrowly defeated Karen Kirbach by a mere 41 votes on the Republican side. Warren received 1,110 votes to Kirbach’s 1,152. Percentagewise, Warren received 50.93 to Kirbach’s 49.07 percent.
Warren will square off with Democrat Kory Chapman in November in the General Election.
The only other contested race in the county was that for Greene County Board. There were five candidates vying for four open seats.
David Hicks received the most votes with 1,518 or 25.41 percent, followed by incumbent Mark Strang with 1,423 or 23.82 percent. Fellow incumbent Earlene Castleberry received 1,178 votes or 19.72 percent of the vote and Christina (Tina) Lahr received 1,104 or 18.48 percent of the vote. Le Esary received 752 votes or 12.59 percent.
Greene County Clerk Melissa Carter ran unopposed on the Republican ticket.
Since there were no Democratic candidates, the first four listed will be seated on the board after the November election.
Darren Bailey easily won the Republican nomination for Governor with 80.48 percent of the vote (1,781).
Mary Miller also easily won the Republican nomination for Representative of the 15th Congressional District with 73.26 percent of the vote (1,485).
Out of a total of 8,583 registered voters in the county, there were 2,783 ballots cast in this primary election which comes out to 32.42 percent of the voting population.
