A committee appointed by Mayor Gary Mendenhall is planning a July 3 celebration to commemorate the United State’s 250th Birthday.
A new event will be added to the festivities and will be held July 4.
Javan Petty appeared at the May 19 meeting of the Pittsfield City Council. He asked the council to hold a run, July 4 starting at 8 a.m. at the square in Pittsfield. The runners will run down Adams Street to Grove, over to Perry, up to Memorial, down to Benson and then get on Monroe to go back to the square.
“All proceeds will go to an organization that provides care packages to deployed soldiers,” Petty said.
The council gave approval.
Plans for the July 3 event, on the courthouse lawn includes, a performance by S and S School of Dance, opening ceremony by the Pittsfield American Legion and a welcome from C.D. Davidsmeyer.
Also will be a historical re-enactment by the Military Museum. Along with a bell ringing and a medallion and flags being handed out by the city and the American Legion.
The council also heard a pitch from Brittany Emerick, the city’s economic development person.
“I would like to get banners for the street lights with the name and pictures of any of our residents who are serving in the military,” Emerick, told the council. “Families or organizations could purchase the flags that we would put out at patriotic holidays, Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July, Veterans Day. At the end of the year, the families would get their banner back.”
