Fire destroyed the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wilson of West Hardin Monday morning about 2-o’clock, while Mr. and Mrs. Wilson and their five children were asleep. They were awakened in time to escape with their lives, clad only in night clothes. Everything in the house was destroyed, including every stitch of clothes. Not a penny’s worth of insurance was on the house or contents. The Wilson family has our sympathy over their misfortune.

Bill Puterbaugh, son of Mrs. Arvella Long of Kampsville, finished 22nd in the 1976 running of the Indianapolis 500 Race on Sunday. Puterbaugh started in the 18th position. He had completed 96 laps at an average speed of 138.928 miles per hour before the race was called because of rain. “We had a new engine in the car and we planned to break it in before we started to charge the leaders. Also we had a flat tire and had to come in for an unscheduled pit stop to change it. Everything was starting to feel good and we were moving up in the field with the rain came,” Puterbaugh said. He won $16,072 for his 22nd place finish this year. Last year Puterbaugh placed seventh in his first start in the famed race and was named rookie of the year for his performance.

According to local electric experts from Ameren/CIPS, Illinois Rural Electric, Illinois Power and Mid-America Interconnective Network (MAIN), the electric supply situation in the State of Illinois looks good and no problems such as those being seen in California and a few other states will be seen here. Although the Illinois State Legislature passed, and the Governor signed a bill, slightly similar to the State of California’s deregulation of their utility industry, the two bills were enough different that the State of Illinois promised to feel no effects similar to that of California from this deregulation process. The Illinois bill was passed at the end of 1997 and caused all utility industries in Illinois to cap the rates they offered at that time or provide a rate decrease. “Basically, we are optimistic that we know we have sufficient generation and that we wont have any problems,” said Susan Gallagher, media representative from Ameren/CIPS. Although we cannot absolutely guarantee that the power will always be on, based on the reliability assessment done, the reliability outlook continues to improve and has continue to improve for ten years. The chances of Illinois Electric rates skyrocketing such as in California is virtually impossible because fo the Illinois deregulation is entirely different in structure form California’s structure.”
