The Elsberry Democrat of last week, in its write up of the Elsberry-Brussels ball game had the following to say about Ottie Plummer, Hardin’s fast ball pitcher, who is developing into a star and we learn has the eyes of the big leagues on him: “Plummer, pitching for Elsberry in Sunday’s game with Brussels humbled the boys who were victorious in the 2 to 1 contest played here in the opening game of the season. Sunday’s game resulted in a victory for Elsberry by a 5 to 1 score. The visitor’s lone run was scored on an overthrow at the start. Plummer established a strike-out record for the present season by whiffing twenty opposing batters, making a total of 96 in the six games pitched for Elsberry. It is doubtful if this record has ever been equaled by amateur or professional. He possessed perfect control and at the conclusion of the eighth inning, with 17 strike-outs to his credit for the game, proceeded to demonstrate to the fans that he was not, in the least fatigued, by fanning the next three men to face him.” Last Sunday Elsberry played St. Peters and Plummer shut them out. The score was 1 to 0.

Calhoun County Commissioners are pondering an idea presented by Judge Richard Greenlief and State’s Attorney Charles Burch to purchase the Calhoun Unit 40 elementary school and move the judicial system to the building, Greenlief informed the commissioners at their July 9 meeting that he would try to get two contractors to attend the August meeting with proposal of what the total cost would be to purchase and renovate the building. Vince Tepen said the county doesn’t have the money necessary to purchase the building but they are hoping to get grant money for the project if they decide it is feasible.
