The first 4-County Fair held at Louisiana, Mo, has passed into history. The counties of Lincoln and Pike in Missouri and Calhoun and Pike in Illinois were included in the experiment. It had a good beginning with a promising future. The four counties lie in a block with the Father of Waters between them. They afford a great variety of productions, and while the four counties are close related geographically, the masses of the people have never mingled, and know little about individual interests and distinctive traits prevailing among the people. All those who attended from Calhoun County were highly pleased with the fair, and have only words of praise for the people of Louisiana and the expensive preparations and untiring efforts they put forth.

Another Calhoun County Apple Festival has come and gone and the sponsors of the event are very complacent as they review the results of their weeks of preparation. The air of gloom that pervaded Calhoun County during Friday and Friday night’s cold snap was replaced by smiles when the autumn sun smiled down and made Saturday and Saturday night bearable for the celebrating throngs. When folks come to Hardin at this time they come to see apples. And what a display greeted them. Farm Advisor Allison and his committee worked tirelessly at their display for three days and long into each night. The original display rack had to be doubled in size and then many late entries could not be shown.

In a St. Louis weekend paper, a government map from the Missouri Division of Employment Security showed all of the area counties in both Missouri and Illinois. They were all named, and they encircled on green county, which was left unmanned. That unnamed county was Calhoun. State’s Attorney Charles Burch brought the paper to the Calhoun Board of Commissioners’ meeting. “They have all of the metropolitan statistics and unemployment. They have named every county surrounding us, and they just have this green block at the bottom. We don’t even merit a name. They’re growing completely around us. They’ve taken in Jersey County, Greene and now they’re going up to Pike and Lincoln on the other side,” Burch said.
