JERSEY: County Board approves updated employee handbook

The Jersey County Board approved the distribution of new employee handbooks for county employees at the board’s regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 13.
Legislative Committee Chairman Kara Ontis said the handbook had redundancies that needed to be addressed, and thanked County Clerk Pan Warford for helping to go through and update the handbook.
“There were several things that had been redundant, there were things that conflicted each other throughout the entire handbook, so Pam cleaned all that up,” Onits said. “We did make some recommendations on different verbiage to add.”
The handbooks will be distributed annually for employees to sign so that the Legislative Committee can have an opportunity to go over it each year and update as needed.
“That way we’re not waiting 10 years to update a handbook and having to do it all in one sitting,” Ontis said.
Chairman Gary Krueger said there was a lot of work that went into the update and thanked the committee as well as Warford for all the effort that went into the project.
The board approved a mutual aid agreement for the Coroner’s Office at Tuesday’s meeting. Mark Wagner, Chairman of the County Service Offices, Public Safety and County Offices Committee, said it was a standard agreement between surrounding counties in case of a disaster with mass casualties in which all the coroners would work together.
A motion was also made and approved for a bid to purchase new firearms for the Jersey County Sheriff’s Department in the amount of $30,506.91, to be paid from the Public Safety Fund.
During the Road and Bridge Committee report the board approved a resolution to award bids for road oil and chip operations for the county as well as a resolution for bids for various counties. During the report, it was also stated that the work on the Fieldon Hollow Road is progressing well and should be open soon.
The board approved the appointment of Sean Park to the Fieldon Fire Protection District with a term to expire in April 2026, and the appointments of Gary Krueger, Rebecca Strang and Carol Schaffner as governing members with two-year terms with the Illinois Valley Economic Development Board.
In other business, the board approved tourism grants for the Jersey County Historical Society’s Apple Festival, the Jersey County Business Association’s Farmers and Artisan Market, the Jersey County Fair, approved a resolution declaring May as Motorcycle Awareness Month in the county and approved a resolution of support of the Alton Road Runners Club’s annual race.
