A meeting of Chicago and Alton Railway officials, Chicago, Peoria and St. Louis, apple growers, farmers, fruit growers and business men of Calhoun county, was held at the courthouse in Hardin. The meeting was called to order by Elmer E. Williams, President of the Calhoun County Improvement Association, who stated that the object of the meeting was for the purpose of enabling all parties interested in our apple crop to get together on a common basis, on the question of establishing Packing Plant Fruit Exchange, barge facilities and railroad and barge transaction rates or any other matters that would be of mutual benefit to all concerned parties.

Present prospects indicate that Illinois will have good but not record-breaking yields of its principal farm crops, according to state and federal departments of agriculture. The yield of winter wheat is expected to be about two-thirds that of last year’s unusually large crop. Corn shows good stands and color, and is being cultivated. An oats crop of some 157 million bushels is now indicated. Last year’s production was 169 million bushels; the ten year average is 137 million bushels. The commercial apple and peach crops are each expected to be only about one-half as large as in 1949.

Calhoun residents have good reason to be proud of their efforts in making its inaugural American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life a great achievement. Twenty-three teams worked hard during these past months to raise money to fight cancer. Their diligence paid off, along with donations from many others. The total amount collected was $36,135 with promises of more to come.
