On July 5, 2025, Jersey County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) Sergeant Chris Jones and Deputy Justin Decker conducted a traffic stop of Clarence F. Smith on Krause Drive in Jerseyville. Using his K9 Jax, Deputy Decker established probable cause to search Smith’s vehicle.During the search, approximately one ounce of suspected crystal methamphetamine, multiple capsules of suspected heroin/fentanyl, and drug paraphernalia were found inside. Smith was arrested at the scene, and the vehicle was towed.
On July 22, Jersey County State’s Attorney Ben Gotten charged Smith with Possession of Methamphetamine, a Class 1 Felony. If convicted, Smith faces a term of imprisonment of 4 to 15 years. Smith is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
