Max Allen Taulman | 69 | Brussels

Max Allen Taulman, age 69, of Brussels, Illinois succumbed to his long battle with renal failure and congestive heart failure on April 29, 2025, surrounded by loved ones at Mercy Heart Hospital in St Louis Missouri.
Max was born Feb. 25, 1956, to Kenneth Allen and Maxine Elizabeth Taulman in the state of Indiana.
He is survived by his stepson Christopher Freeman of Grafton; daughter, Carie (Freeman) Bishop of Brussels and son-in-law, Brian Bishop of St. Louis, Missouri. His grandchildren include Wyatt Freeman of Carrollton, Madalynn Martin of Alton, Nolan Bland of Nebo and Oliver Bishop of Brussels. The one who made him great, [great]granddaughter, Mia Swarringin of Alton. Notable nephews, Romie (Veronica) Womack of Batchtown and Johnathan Myers of Jerseyville. His sister-in-law, Crystal Hillis of Jacksonville. Aunts, Doris Whitlock of Godfrey, Berneda “Neta” Usery of Grafton, Virginia Thibodaux of Virginia state and many cousins. His family by choice: Michael and Debbie Tepen of Meppen, Jordan and Laci Tepen (Brody White and Isabella Tepen) of Meppen. His closest friends: Lon Grandia (Brussels), Jeff Kamp (Brussels), Jeff Bradley (Brussels), Charlie Snyders (Carrollton), Joe “Joe Momma” Robeen. He was grateful to work with Coach David Franke.
Max was proceeded in death by grandmother, Minnie (Dinkler) Nairn of Deer Plain; aunt, Emma Louise Bradley of Deer Plain; mother, Maxine (Nairn) Taulman of Deer Plain; father, Kenneth Taulman of Indiana state; a son, Gavin Bland of Brussels; ex-wife, Janis (Taylor-Baze) Taulman of Jerseyville; uncles, Charles and Gerald “Windy” Nairn; step-father, Leonardo Impellizzeri of Shipman; and close friends, Robert and Roland Meyers (Brussels).
Max graduated from Brussels High School in 1975, where he then worked for the Brussels School District doing maintenance, student transportation, coaching and custodial work where he retired after many years of service. Max was a selfless and patient man. His greatest life accomplishments were being a coach to countless students and a papa to his grandchildren and great-grandchild. He was a big family man and loved everyone in his life immensely. He was also a die hard STL Cardinals fan who enjoyed watching horse racing, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, going fishing and decorating for Halloween. His laugh was infectious to all who heard it.
There will be a Celebration of Life at the Brussels American Legion from 1 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2025.
