Sorry, there was no Point News last week due to my computer being down. Many thanks to my son John who finally fixed the problem and has me up and going again.
Rita Nolte of Golden Eagle hosted Easter dinner last Sunday. Present were Mark and Jennifer Nolte, Ellie and Blake, Derrick and Jan Bick & family, Judy Bick, Roy and Barb Hagen and other Hagen family members. Lots of delicious food and a great afternoon together.
The family of the late Johnny and Colette Caselton enjoyed their annual family Easter dinner and day together on Saturday, April 4.
Dinner guests of Yvonne Baecht on Easter were Keith and Becky Baecht, son Samuel and Sue Underwood, all of Jerseyville. Late afternoon Daniel Baecht of Brookline, MO arrived and he remained with his mother for three days, helping on the farm and with doctor visits. I know she enjoyed his visit as well.
Francis Toppmeyer, Mark and Mary Toppmeyer and Max, and Maggie and Josh Wieneke enjoyed Easter dinner with Ed and Lisa Heffington in Godfrey on Saturday, April 4. The Heffington’s two daughters Ellen and Emily and their families were also present as well as Julie Carnes and Caleb of Edwardsville and Jane and Todd Mandernach and Wyatt of Marthasville, MO.
Easter Breakfast, egg hunt and church service was held at St. Matthew Church on Easter Sunday. So nice to see the church filled to capacity. Surprising me at the church service was my daughter and son-in-law, Shelly and Dennis Scherer of Wright City, MO. We enjoyed dinner together and afterwards the Scherer’s had numerous things to do for me inside and out. This was greatly appreciated, thanks again to both of them.
On the weekend of March 27 little Mary Maxine Kiel, daughter of Joey and Chelsie Kiel, celebrated her First Birthday with family members at the home of her parents. She didn’t seem to know what the celebration was all about, but she certainly enjoyed tearing up and eating her little birthday cake as well as opening her many gifts.
Stevie and Charlie Kiel, children of Joey and Chelsie Kiel of Brussels, celebrated their 8th Birthday on Saturday, April 4, with a bowling party for family and friends. That evening the Kiel children got to decorate Easter Bunny cakes and enjoy all the gifts they got earlier in the day. The Kiel children are grandchildren of Denis and Jeni Kiel of Brussels and Steve and Pat Tepen and great-grandparents are Jim and Connie Wieneke, all of Hardin.
Congratulations to Gail Kirn of Lee’s Summit, MO who celebrated his 90th Birthday on Friday evening. His wife, Jan, along with family and friends threw him a fantastic party at the VFW Hall in Lee’s Summit. Everyone enjoyed the catered dinner, listening to and dancing to the band and enjoying a wonderful evening together. Many relatives were in attendance for the event. Among those from Calhoun present were Denny and Kim Vogel, Wayne and Lisa Vogel and Joyce Vogel. Many more happy and healthy ones Gail.
Congratulations to Cohen Affholder, son of Cody and Ashley Affholder of Golden Eagle, who celebrated his Fifth Birthday on Saturday with his family.
On Saturday visitors of Francis Toppmeyer and I were John and Julie Carnes and Caleb of Edwardsville. John did a lot of work outside for me and Julie and Caleb helped her dad with other jobs. While outside working John also grilled pork steaks, pork chops and smoked sausage for our dinner that evening. Julie had the task of frying skillet after skillet of mushrooms and preparing other items for our dinner that evening. She also made a yummy lemon cheesecake for dessert. Thanks to the Carnes family for all they accomplished for Francis and I.
Ladies of the Brussels Woman’s Club please be reminded that this Friday, April 17 our monthly meeting will be held at the Wittmond Hotel. We will enjoy lunch together at 1 PM and then hold the business meeting, followed by dessert by Hostess Judy Burch and Program on Health by Chairman Elaine Eberlin and last of all flower exchange.
Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 18 when the Sons of the American Legion in Brussels will be holding their barbeque pork steak and brat dinners with three sides and sandwiches as well. Serving time begins at 10:30 AM. Carry out or dine in.
Deepest sympathy to the family of Mary Ann Flanigan, age 96, former Meppen resident who passed away on March 31. Funeral was on Wednesday at St. Joseph Church in Meppen with Rev. Don Roberts officiating. She is survived by five children: Theresa (Jim) Johnes. Bill Flanigan, Sister Anna Marie Flanigan, Kathy (Joe) Schulte, Albert Flanigan and their families. Eight siblings: Marjorie Jones, Doris McEuan, Jim Klunk, Theresa Schultz, Rita (Sam) Perry, Alice (Alan) Clune, Helen Whited and Barbara (John) Kane and one sister-in-law Pat Klunk. She was preceded in death by her parents Valentine and Evelyn Klunk, and her husband Marvin Flanigan of which they shared 59 years together and she was preceded in death by three granddaughters Angela Johnes and Laura and Lisa Johnes.

PRAYER FOR VOLUNTEER WEEK – Dear Lord, We give thanks to all the volunteers working in our county, all who serve others, unpaid and often unrecognized. We give thanks that people find purpose and fellowship through volunteering and pray for projects in your area that rely on volunteers. Lord, we appreciate the dedication of our these people. May they know how much their hard work and commitment mean to us and to those they serve. Amen.
