A Barry teenager and a 2026 graduate of Western High School remains in critical condition in a Springfield Hospital after his vehicle was hit by a train May 22, one week after graduation.
According to his parents, Mark and Wendi OItker, Sam is still in critical condition and still in the ICU.
“When they lower his sedation, they talk to him, they ask him to give a thumbs up or open his eyes,” Wendi Oitker said. “So far he is responding to and following their commands.”
Oitker said her son was originally unable to get a CT Scan or an MRI to access his brain injury, but, has since been able to undergo the tests, which were encouraging.
Sunday, May 31, the family was told by the neurologist handling the case that he expects Sam to make a complete recovery. He remains in critical condition during this time.
The younger Oitker also suffered broken bones and internal injuries to his spleen and liver, both of which seem to be responding to treatment.
“We are feeling optimistic and we are asking for continued prayers for the healing to continue,” Oitker said. “Thank you all for the overwhelming support Sammy is receiving. It means so much to us. God is good.”
The Western Community has been taking up collections of gas cards, money and well wishes that are being delivered to the Oitkers at the hospital. Donations can be left at the school or the Liberty Bank in Barry. A community prayer vigil was held at Western High School, the following morning of the accident.
“We appreciate all support and prayers for Sam,” his parents said May 31.
Oitker was injured May22 about 4:30 p.m. when he was leaving work at Smith Agri, west of Barry and south of the railroad tracks. The Norfolk Southern train was traveling west bound and struck Oitker’s vehicle in the passenger side.
Oitker was airlifted to St. John’s in Springfield.
Assisting at the scene was the Barry Fire Department, Pike County EMS and Air-Evac.
The crash is still under investigation.
