West Central made 12 free throws in the fourth quarter and beat South County 51-37 Dec. 30 in the fifth-place game of the Waverly Holiday Tournament.
Zack Evans was selected to the All-Tournament team.
The Cougars (12-3) led 16-12 after one quarter and 30-18 at halftime. They extended the lead to 37-20 in the third quarter. South County, however, scored 12 straight points and trailed just 37-32 going into the fourth.
West Central made 12 of 15 free throw attempts and outscored South County 14-5 in the quarter. Chance Little made five of six free attempts in the quarter while Tyson Brown made four of five attempts.
Brown scored 13 points to lead the Cougars. Little scored 12 points, and Tysyn Mast scored 10.
Zack Evans scored eight points, and Payton Hartley scored five. Mason Berry scored two points, and Lathan Barnett scored one.
West Central scored 14 straight points in the second quarter and beat Tri-City/Sangamon Valley 70-30 Dec. 27 in the first round of the tournament.
TCSV led 20-18 before the Cougars took the lead. Mast started the run with a three-point basket, and Berry made a basket and a free throw. Jayson Howard made two free throws to give West Central a 26-20.
Berry scored, and Hartley had a steal and a three-point play. Mast made a free throw, and the Cougars led 32-20 with 2:44 remaining in the second quarter. Hartley made a three-point basket with two seconds remaining, and West Central led 41-25 at halftime.
The Cougars scored the first 12 points of the third quarter to extend their lead to 53-25. Evans scored seven points, and Mast scored five during the run. West Central led 63-32 after three quarters.
West Central made 18 steals in the game. Mast had five steals, and Barnett had four. Berry, Hartley and Little each had two.
Evans scored 20 points and had four assists for the Cougars. Mast scored 13 points and had three assists. Hartley scored 10 points and had six rebounds.
Parker Hoots scored seven points and had five rebounds. Berry and Jackson Ford each scored five points. Howard and Little each scored four points. Barnett scored two points and had five assists.
New Berlin made three free throws in the final 18 seconds and beat West Central 56-52 Dec. 28 in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
West Central trailed 50-43 with three minutes remaining in the game. Brown made a three-point basket, and Mast two free throws to cut the margin to 50-48 with 2:41 remaining.
The Cougars missed a shot that would have tied the game, and New Berlin scored to extend the lead to four points.
Evans and Berry each made one of two free throws attempts, and West Central trailed 52-50 with 30 seconds remaining. After New Berlin got a free throw, Evans scored to narrow the margin to 53-52 with 18 seconds remaining.
West Central trailed 11-3 and 15-6 in the first quarter. Mast made a three-point basket to cut the margin to 15-9 after one quarter.
Evans made a free throw and basket late in the second, and the Cougars led 28-25 at halftime. The game was tied at 35 before New Berlin scored in the final minute and led 37-35 after three quarters.
The Cougars made just 20 of 57 field goal attempts (35 percent) in the game, including five of 23 three-point attempts and were just seven of 14 from the free throw line. New Berlin made 18 of 32 (56 percent) field goals and 18 of 26 free throw attempts.
Evans scored 23 points and had three steals for West Central. Mast scored nine points and had three steals. Little scored six points and had 10 rebounds.
Brown and Hartley each scored five points. Barnett scored three points and had six rebounds. Berry scored one point.
West Central outscored Greenfield-Northwestern in every quarter and advanced to the fifth-place game with a 55-41 win Dec.28.
The Cougars led 16-10 after one quarter and scored the first eight points of the second. Evans made a three-point basket and Little made a free throw to start the quarter. Mast had a steal and scored and grabbed an offensive rebound and scored, and West Central led 24-10.
The Cougars led 33-23 at halftime and 40-27 after three quarters.
Evans scored 17 points to lead West Central, and Mast scored 14. Little scored 10 points.
Brown scored five points, and Berry scored four. Howard scored three points, and Hartley scored two.
