Carrollton holds off Lady Cougar charge

Carrollton allowed just one point in the last 5 minutes and beat West Central 42-34 in girls’ basketball Jan. 31 at Winchester.
Maeleigh Alexander and Emma Smith both score to tie the game at 33 with 5:53 remaining in the game. Carrollton scored the next four points to take the lead for good.
West Central had four turnovers in the final 5 minutes. The Cougars only point came when Smith made a free throw with 1:25 remaining.
Carrollton scored the first 10 points of the game, but the Cougars cut the margin to 20-15 at halftime. They tied the game at 27, and the game was tied at 29 after three quarters.
Smith scored 13 points to lead West Central, and Brylee Lawson scored 10.
Vickie McGee scored four points, and Ashlyn Likes scored three. Alexander and Laura Garrett each scored two points.
Granite City held West Central to 10 second half points and beat the Cougars 43-36 in a consolation bracket game Jan. 27 at the Carrollton Invitational Tournament.
The Cougars led 26-14 at halftime but were outscored 29-10 in the second half.
Lawson scored 13 to lead West Central. McGee scored nine points, and Garrett scored seven. Smith scored four points, and Likes scored three.
Three players scored in double figures to lead the Cougars to a 48-36 win over Metro East-Lutheran in the tournament Jan. 25.
McGree scored 13 points to lead West Central, and Lawson scored 12. Smith scored 10 points. Garrett scored seven points, and Likes scored three.
Gateway Academy of St. Louis beat West Central 60-34 in the first round of the tournament Jan. 22.
Lawson scored 11 points to lead the Cougars. McGee and Smith each scored nine points. Aubrey Blevins scored four points, and Garrett scored one.
