“Show off your pets at the library this month”
During the month of February, Jerseyville Public Library (JPL) has numerous events scheduled, including a pet fashion show, ukulele jam session, lego club, and movie nights, to name a few.
On Saturday, Feb. 18, at 1 p.m. the JPL is offering folks the chance to give their pets a high-fashion makeover and show them off on the red carpet for a chance to be named “Most Fashionable Pet” and win the grand prize, a fabulous 4” pet cake hand-crafted and loaded with treats by Espresso Yourself Bakery (plus a gift certificate for their human), at the JPL’s first ever Jerseyville’s Got Pets, Pet Fashion Show Contest. The first 50 pets get an Espresso Yourself handmade pet treat and all pets get a photo taken at the exclusive red carpet photo backdrop. Participants are also welcome to bring a donation for the Riverbend Humane Society and receive a free Book Buck for use in the book sale room (Riverbend has a special need for: laundry soap, indoor Purina Cat Chow, kitty litter, paper towels, Kong toys (L) and Creamy PB (no xylitol). Pets must be on a leash or controlled at all times and owners are responsible for any pet accidents. In the event of cold weather, the event will be held at the St. Francis Gym.
There are many other events at JPL this Library Lovers Month, including a Love Your Ukulele Jam Session this Thursday, Feb. 2, at 6:30 p.m. The library will be holding the event in celebration of National Ukulele Day and jamming to some easy love songs (suitable for beginners).
On Saturday, Feb. 4, there are two all ages events on the schedule: LEGO Club at 10 a.m. for ages kindergarten through seventh grade – JPL provides the LEGOS, participants make the masterpieces; and Take Your Child to the Library Day where all day long parents and children can discover all the library has to offer, take a selfie with their giant photo frame, check out some book bundles and make a craft at the DIY Craft Station.
Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. is the Zoom event ILP Presents: A Conversation with Kwame Alexander, poet and best-selling/award-winning children’s and young adult author of 36 books. Kwame will share ways to say yes to your story and persist in the face of rejection. Those wishing to take part in the event may call 618-498-9514 to register and receive the Zoom link to watch this inspirational evening from your home.
More children’s programming will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 22, with a Full STEAM Ahead program where ages kindergarten through seventh grade can help the Three Little Pigs by building a house that will withstand the huffing and puffing of that Big Bad Wolf (all materials provided). Please call JPL to register for the STEAM program. On Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 10 a.m., preschool children (ages 2-6) are welcome to attend Preschool Storytime where Ms. Laurie will read stories, and lead the children in songs and a craft. This is a great opportunity for your small children to socialize with others their own age.
To finish off the month, there are two opportunities for movie lovers. On Thursday, Feb. 23, at 6:30 p.m., the JPL will be hosting a True Crime Book to Movie Night showing of the movie “Catch Me If You Can” with Leonardo Dicaprio and Tom Hanks. The movie is based on the book patrons have been reading all month long – stop by the library to pick up a copy of the book to read to see how it compares to the movie. For those who are able to attend during the day, the Movie Matinee this month will be “The Fabelmans” and will be shown on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. As always, freshly popped popcorn will be provided at both movies and attendees can bring their favorite drink.
The JPL will be closed on Sunday, Feb. 19; and Monday, Feb. 20, in honor of Presidents’ Day. All are welcome to attend events and activities at the library whether you have a library card or not. A library card is required to check out materials.
