The Jersey Community High School (JCHS) Theatre Department is hard at work rehearsing for their upcoming spring musical, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.”
This classic musical is based on the Charles M. Schultz comic strip, Peanuts, and was written by American composer, Clark Gesner, in 1967. Gesner wrote the book, music, and lyrics.
The musical follows a day in the life of Charlie Brown and includes all of the beloved characters from the cartoon. JCHS Theatre Director Brett Beauchamp said that the production has great music, is humorous, and will bring back memories of the Peanuts for those who grew up with them.
“The music is incredibly charming,” said Beauchamp, “and the dialogue is very funny. For those who grew up with the Peanuts, this will be a nostalgic night of theatre.”
Beauchamp said that this is an all-ages production and that it is a “light” show.
“It’s light, it’s charming,” he said. “You don’t really have to think a whole lot. It’s just enjoyable.”
Another fun feature of the production, which also makes it a “light” show, is that the colorful scenes will give the theatre department a chance to showcase their new lighting system, according to Beauchamp.
Students have been rehearsing since November and are now in the home stretch, with the musical making its debut on Thursday, March 16, at 7 p.m. Subsequent shows will be on Friday, March 17, and Saturday, March 18, both at 7 p.m. as well as a Sunday, March 19, showing at 2 p.m.
According to Beauchamp, the students have been working tirelessly to ensure the musical is ready for audiences.

“These are some great kids, they really are a breath of fresh air,” he said. “I have never given students President’s Day off from rehearsals, but this year I was going to because we were ahead of schedule and I thought, ‘I’ll give them a break,’ but, when I offered, they insisted that they still rehearse that Monday. Normally it’s a 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. rehearsal that day, but I told them to at least sleep in and we settled on 12 to 5 p.m.”
Beauchamp said that he thinks the audiences are going to have a great time at the shows.
“I think people are going to come out and have a great time,” said Beauchamp. “We love these kids and they work so hard. We want them to have a good weekend and get the response they deserve.”
