The Greenfield Lady Tigers seventh grade volleyball team made a lot of memories this year and racked up quite a record doing so, including a fourth-place finish at State.
Led by Head Coach T.J. Plogger, Assistant Coach Maddie Nichols and Volunteer Coach Rachel Kinser, the Lady Tigers finished their season with a record of 19 wins and 9 losses.
At the State level, the Lady Tigers made it through the first round defeating LaSalle Trinity Catholic who came in with a perfect 18-0 record. Greenfield defeated them in straight sets 25-16, 25-18 to advance to the semi-finals.
Unfortunately, they came up against Pontiac St. Mary’s, who also sported a perfect record on the season at 25-0 after defeating Royal Prairieview Ogden 25-14, 25-7. Pontiac would go on to become the State 1A Champions by defeating Williamsfield 25-13,25-9.
However, in the semi-final, Pontiac defeated Greenfield in straight sets 25-15, 25-13. Greenfield would then play Lincoln west Lincoln-Broadwell for third/fourth place and fall 25-17, 25-9 to claim fourth place in the state.
Post season began for the Lady Tigers with regional play where they were ranked as the second seed, right behind number one seed St. John’s Lady Redbirds.
Greenfield had an easy job of defeating East St. Louis Younge in the first round 25-9, 25-2 to advance to the second round where they would meet up with third seed Lovejoy.
Lovejoy was a little bit more difficult, but the Lady Tigers still managed to defeat them in straight sets, 25-16, 25-14 to earn a chance at the regional championship where they would face off against the No. 1 seeded St. John’s Lady Redbirds.
The Lady Tigers proved rankings prove nothing by defeating St. John’s in straight sets 25-18, 25-20.
St. John’s would play host to the Sectional games and the Lady Tigers would find themselves up against a tough Augusta Southeastern team. This was the only match of the post season in which Greenfield had to go three sets.
The Lady Tigers would lose the first game 20-25, but come back to win the last two 25-22, 25-17 to advance to the State tournament, and the rest, as they say, is history.
