The Grafton City Council held their monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 16. The meeting began with the Jersey County Circuit Clerk Daniel Schetter addressing the council. Schetter spoke about using several grants for modernizations and the use of $75,000 of Peterson Equipment with no taxpayer money.
Schetter presented Grafton Police Chief Eric Spanton and Mayor Morrow with a check for $5,000. The check will be used to purchase new handheld radios for local police officers— which will greatly increase response time and communication.
The council approved the monthly invoices for the treasurer’s report and then called upon Jake Weber for the public works report.
“The works have been busy maintaining the minor flooding we’ve had,” said Weber. “We’ve been keeping on staying busy.”
Weber mentioned a handful of projects the works department is doing, such as painting curves, putting up new bathroom signs, and local clean-up. Morrow took a moment to congratulate Weber and the works department on their work.
“I’ve been hearing a lot of compliments on how good the city looks,” said Morrow
The city engineer report followed next with a focus on the pickle ball court project. The report detailed three bids on the project. The three bid amounts were $225,000, $277,286, and $273,142. The project was put out to bid with the expectation it would be over budget. The recommendation was to award the bid of $225,000 to C.E Mahoney.
Morrow then spoke about upcoming Memorial Day events at the Whalen-Hill American Legion Post 648. It will be the third annual Memorial Day Commemoration Ceremony at 12 p.m. on Monday, May 29, at the post’s World War I Monument. The event will be held at 14258 Scenic Hill Drive in Grafton.
On June 9 and 11, there will also be a D-Day reenactment based on the U.S. Army Rangers scaling of Point-Du-Hoc.
Final words came on other projects, including concrete work in the Grafton Hills subdivision.
The Grafton City Council meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at City Hall. They are scheduled to meet again on Tuesday, June 20.
