Jersey County Sheriff Nick Manns issued a press release regarding last week’s Illinois Supreme Court ruling that determined ending the cash bail system in the state is constitutional.
“As a career law enforcement officer and as a citizen of Illinois, I am saddened, but not taken by surprise,” the Sheriff’s release state. “I humbly disagree with the idea that ending cash bail will
somehow contribute to equal justice and equity in our criminal justice system. All of us seek equal justice and equity but it seems that in that search, we should first consider and even consult the victims of all crimes as we make decisions which can affect them. I cannot help but feel that removing barriers and consequences for charged suspects, even “non-violent” ones, and allowing them to return to our streets and communities to await trial could lead to more crime, more victimization, and even more substance abuse, especially in rural, low income, and struggling communities. It also concerns me when the advice and pleas of nearly every State’s Attorney and law enforcement leader in our State seem to be set aside.”
Sheriff Mann’s release stated that with the act now in place his department along with fellow police departments, State’s Attorney and Judge will continue to do their part to keep the community safe.
“Still, complaining and fretting will not change what is now in place,” the release continued. “My job, and that of the men and women of the Jersey County Sheriff’s Office, is to serve and protect you, the citizens of Jersey County. We will do just that. With the help of our fellow police departments and our State’s Attorney and the leadership and sound reasoning of our Judge, we will develop a process that makes the best of this for our county. I know everyone involved will continue to do their part in keeping you and our community safe. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns or questions. Thank you.”
