Now that summer has passed and the kids are back in school, the Jerseyville Public Library (JPL) is gearing up for Fall. JPL is open to everyone whether they have a library card or not and there is plenty to do besides read. Check out all the fun, family friendly activities coming to you this September.
Speaking of Back to School, children are invited to head over to JPL on Friday, Sept. 1 between the hours of 3 and 5 p.m. to grab a selfie with Pete the Cat and receive a special goodie bag full of Pete the Cat swag (while supplies last).
Once again, it’s time for LEGO Club on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 10 a.m. Anyone from Kindergarten to seventh grade (and beyond if they really love LEGOs) is welcome to come to JPL and make the theme or any creation they wish. JPL provides the LEGOs and the masterpieces will be displayed at the Library all month long.
A special event will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m: A Live Zoom conversation with two-time Pulitzer Prize winning and #1 New York Times bestselling author, Colson Whitehead, facilitated by Illinois Libraries Present. Register by calling JPL at 618-498-9514 to attend the Watch Party at the Library and participate in this live event.
Two more super fun activities are coming for kids in September. On Saturday, Sept. 16 (National Playdough Day) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Playdough fans are welcome to drop in and play with this popular, soft, colored clay and on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 10 a.m., parents are encouraged to bring their children ages 2-6 for a Preschool Storytime, back from its hiatus in the summer. The children’s librarian will lead the little ones in songs, read books and lead a craft. This is a great opportunity for preschoolers to interact with others their age.
For adults, JPL will be screening the live action 2023 release of The Little Mermaid, Rated PG. Please bring your favorite drink and JPL will provide the fresh, popped popcorn! No registration required.
The month culminates on National Good Neighbor Day, Thursday, Sept. 28 with a big, blow-out Neighborhood Block Party. Everyone is welcome to stop by between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m., where the street between JPL and the Courthouse will be blocked off for all the fun. There will be hotdogs, yard games, coloring, a Big Truck show, Riverbend Axe throwing, photos ops with costumed characters and some other surprises! JPL will be joined by some of its neighbors: including the Sheriff’s Department; Strang, Parish & Graham; First Baptist Church and others. This will be an awesome event you will not want to miss.
Other highlights include: Library Card Sign-up Month, book donations accepted through September in preparation for the Friends’ Fall Book Sale coming in October, JPL will be closed for Labor Day weekend (Sept. 3 and 4) and if you are interested in an upcoming Mobile Device Basics Workshop, call the Library for more information.
As always, everyone is welcome to attend events and activities at the Library regardless of library card status. A library card is only required to check out materials. There are also many community resources available to those without a card including photocopying and printing, faxing, scanning, notary, public use computers and more.
