Former Marines celebrated the traditional Marine Corps Birthday cake cutting ceremony at the Whalen-Hill Grafton American Legion Post #648 Friday, Nov. 10. The oldest Marine had the first piece of cake and then passed it to the youngest. The cake was cut with a Marine NCO sword. A brief history of the founding of the Marine Corps was read along with the 1921 Marine General Order #47 that officially established November 10th to be the official birthday of the Corps along with the 2023 birthday message from General Eric M. Smith. The Second Continental Congress passed a resolution to establish a Continental Marine Corps on 10 November 1775 and Captain Samuel Nicholas began recruiting marines from Tunn’s Tavern in Philadelphia, PA. The Corps has a long and cherished history and has played a key role in all American conflicts. A great time was had by all that attended and Marines will always be ready and live up to the motto “Semper Fidelis.”
