Members of Dr. Silas Hamilton Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution held their 59th Annual Awards Night Monday, March 4, at a dinner meeting at the First United Methodist Church in Jerseyville.
Regent Sandra Burch Cornelius presided over the meeting that honored seven seniors from area high schools who were chosen by their teachers and peers to be the 2023 DAR Good Citizens. Reverend Patrick Embley, First Baptist Church, Jacksonville, IL was the speaker of the evening.
The DAR Good Citizen Award, sponsored nationally by the NSDAR is based on qualities of good character including dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.
Roberta Groppel and Katie Morgan, co-chairs of the DAR Good Citizens Committee, presented Good Citizen pins, certificates and monetary awards to the following winners: Brussels High School, Cheyenne Brundies, daughter of Denise Lynette Brundies-Scranton; Bunker Hill High School, Kaylin Leslie Bartee, daughter of Steve and Amanda Bartee; Calhoun High School, Taylor Jean Klaas, daughter of LeaAnn Kathleen Klaas; Carlinville High School, Patrick Joseph Dunn, son of Matt and Jackie Dunn (were unable to attend); Gillespie High School, Leo McGrady Page, son of Brian and Whitney Page; JCHS, Connor Chin, son of Anthony and Zoe Chin; Southwestern High School, Alyssa Joy Kasten, daughter of Matthew and Carolyn Kasten.
Cheyenne Brundies was judged winner of the essay contest. The chapter has been notified that she is the District V winner and will be honored at the Illinois State Conference Youth Day Award Luncheon at the Hotel DoubleTree Convention Center in Bloomington on April 27. She is the 7th District V winner from the chapter.
The next meeting will be April 6 at the Jersey Township Building. District Director Nila Catron will be the guest speaker.
