After requesting $5,000 from the City of Jerseyville through a tourism grant, Got Faith was awarded $3,000, which Jerseyville Mayor Kevin Stork said was the maximum amount the city could afford for the group’s efforts.
“They do a men’s group, which brings about 500 people to our city every year and fundraising efforts at Wal-Mart, which brings people there to shop,” Stork said following the March 5 meeting. “We try to look at things that increase traffic into the city. That is the intent behind our tourism grants. There are a lot of variables we look at when approving these things.”
Stork said Got Faith also brings folks into the city during the Christmas Holiday Season.
Outside of the grant, the Jerseyville City Council decreed March 18 as “Trisome Awareness Day,” which brings awareness to conditions derived from excess chromosomes, such as Downs Syndrome.
The council then announced that April 8 will feature a solar eclipse in Jerseyville, adding the Jerseyville Public Library will be giving away free eclipse glasses. Stork said the city would continue to get information to the public regarding more businesses and groups hosting events for that day.
Other than that, Stork said there was no new business at that meeting.
