The Calhoun Warriors are ready for spring and have taken the mound with the softball and baseball season underway.
Warriors baseball is starting the season off with their new coach, Head Coach Riley Caselton, who has high hopes for the season and future of the baseball program.
Coach Caselton said he’s got a large number of kids this year, which means a lot of skilled athletes for each spot on the field and an opportunity for the junior varsity team to compete in more matches.
“We are returning a lot of key starters,” Coach Caselton said. “We only lost a few seniors. We have a phenomenal freshman class that are going to be competing for starting spots. We have 26 players this year, that’s not normal for Calhoun, that’s a lot. We got our best nine out there starting, and the good thing is we got another nine behind them that could fill their spots. That’s the thing about this year we have so many boys that can play so many different spots.”
With such a strong and versatile squad, Coach Casleton said the sky’s the limit this year.
“Very high hopes for this year,” he said. “We have the team to go deep into the postseason. We’re still fine tuning a few things, but these are the guys. The next couple of years are going to be a blast. This year, next year and the year after is looking phenomenal.”
Softball Head Coach Ann Gilman said she also expects a great season for the Calhoun Lady Warriors.
After a tough loss against Carrollton in the sectionals last year, Coach Gilman said the girls still finished strong at 27-11.
“We play a very tough schedule. We really reach out to 2A, 3A, 4A schools to try and raise the level of competition and help our game out, so I’m good with 27-11 with the schedule that we play,” Coach Gilman said.
With only one starter missing from last year, Coach Gilman said there are some pretty good younger athletes to fill in the gap.
“I think we’re going to be pretty strong defensively and offensively. So I look for good things this season,” she said. “We have a great hardworking group of girls. I expected a great season.”
