Over 30 teams of golfers joined together at the Lockhave Golf Club for the Larry Bear Golf Tournament on Friday, May 10. The annual golf tournament raises money for the JCH Foundation’s Medical Education Fund which provides scholarships and loans to area students.
The JCH Foundation held their 25th Annual Golf Tournament on Friday, May 10, at the Lockhaven Golf Club.
The Larry Bear Golf Tournament raises funds each year for the foundation’s Medical Education Fund program which goes towards scholarships and loans to local students who are pursuing an education in the medical field.
“We have funded over 180 local students from Jersey, Calhoun and Greene. It’s generated over $400,000 for that program,” Charity Roth, JCH Foundation Director said. “Students are eligible for up to $8,000 over the course of four years, and then if they return to the service area and work in the healthcare field then that becomes a full scholarship. If not, it becomes a loan.”
Roth said one of the purposes of the program is to help bring some of the area’s best and brightest back once they begin their career.
“Currently, I’d say we probably have fifteen employees on staff actually at the hospital, about three to four that have returned to the area. We have some working in nursing homes, some working in physical therapy. It’s a really good program,” she said. “ We want them to go get their education and bring their skill set back to us. Bring that expertise back to the area so that we can have the best and brightest.”
The golf tournament and educational fund program are fortunate to have several sponsors and volunteers who make everything possible. Some of this year’s biggest sponsors were Jerseyville Banking Center, Marsh and McClennan Agency, Pointer Electric, Daniel Schetter, and the lunch sponsor Jersey State Bank.
“This could not be possible without our volunteers. It’s a lot of work, but it’s a great day. We have great volunteers from the hospital and from businesses too,” Roth said.
