We are informed that former Governor Chas. S. Deneen, Republican candidate for United States Senator, will be in Hardin at 10-o’clock Thursday morning. Governor Deneen will leave Alton and will drive by way of Jerseyville to Hardin. Governor Deneen will be here only one-half hour as he is compelled to leave here at to make a night meeting in Bureau county.
Sept. 29, 1949
An area on the Mississippi River near Batchtown will be available this year for duck shooting, as the State of Illinois has completed two new public hunting grounds that will be open for waterfowl shooting this season. The other one is near Beardstown. There are now ten such areas throughout Illinois. Frank Bellrose, game technician for the Illinois Natural History Survey, says it looks like this season will be a good one for Illinois hunters.

Sunday was a beautiful, early fall day, and thousands of visitors flocked to Calhoun to enjoy it. A recent feature story in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said that 20,000 “gawkers” came to isolated Calhoun County on a good weekend. Last Sunday all ferries were busy all day long and into the night. Cars waiting in line to get on the Ferry at Kampsville were parked two blocks back from the ferry landing and in both directions on route 100. Orchardists and fruit stands did good business.

First Bank at Pleasant Hill has been sold to the Bank of Kampsville, pending regulatory approval. According to Cathy Theen of First Bank corporate offices, no closing date for the transaction has been set. “We have to wait for regulatory approval and that’s out of our hands. It will be the first of the year were sure of that because of Y2K concerns.” Theen said the sale was an “in wholesale” meaning all loans, deposits, real estate assets were included.
