Apple harvest to end next week. Next week will about complete the harvest of Calhoun county’s apple crop. If the frost remains away from the corn for another two weeks, Calhoun producers will go into winter quarters in pretty nice shape.

Miss Betty Humphrey, Apple Queen, enjoyed her visit with Governor Stevenson last Wednesday. She said that the governor showed a lot of interest in Calhoun and its apples and expressed regrets that he was unable to attend our festival. Miss Humphrey presented the governor with a package of four different varieties of choice apples, which he began sampling at once. Several photographs were made of the scene in the governor’s private office. Miss Letha Caselton, Paul Hanks, and C.W. German accompanied Miss Humphrey to Springfield. The party went to lunch with Jimmie Ringhausen, a Hardin boy who works in the finance department at the state house.

The County Commissioners have decided to continue with plans for a county-wide ambulance service, after the tax levy was defeated by voters recently. A total of $20,443.05 has been donated by citizens of the county toward the ambulance service. An ambulance committee, members of which will represent all areas of the county, is being selected presently and this committee will act in an advisory capacity to the County Board of Commissioners in all things relative to the ambulance.

Calhoun County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeffery Cope observed a maroon Chevy Camaro parked by the water plant at 4:42 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16. Deputy Cope spoke with the two occupants. The occupants stated that their vehicle had broken down. Deputy Cope detected a strong odor of ammonia emanating from and around the vehicle. Close examination revealed multiple components of a methamphetamine laboratory. Multiple containers were located outside the vehicle containing stolen anhydrous ammonia. A loaded 45-caliber pistol was found hidden within the vehicle.
