Sheriff Schleeper and his deputy Joe Schmeider went up to the north end of Calhoun County last Monday afternoon and there on the Illinois side of the Mississippi river, above Baytown, found a still in operation, manufacturing “hootch.” An elderly man, about 55-years of age, Silas Garrett by name, was in charge of the outfit. The Sheriff and his deputy arrested Garrett and raided the place. The officers found a quart of liquor which, together with the still and Garrett, were brought to Hardin.

A flotilla of Navy vessels passed Hardin. Fourteen ships formerly used for training purposes at Great Lakes left Chicago Sunday to proceed down the Illinois and Mississippi rivers to join the Navy’s mothball fleet. The craft included ten patrol boats, each 173 feet long, and four minesweepers each 134 feet long. The ships left Chicago in two groups and proceeded down the Illinois past Hardin in single file.

The kids could hardly wait as Cecil Peters and Henry Cloniger installed a new merry-go-round on the Hardin Grade School property. The Scouting For Food Drive was a tremendous success this year. Over 1700 items were collected by the boys in Cub Pack #84. This is an increase of more than 700 items over last year’s food drive. Bags were distributed in Batchtown, Hamburg, Hardin, Kampsville and Mozier, and we were overwhelmed by the positive response of the communities. All the food collected was taken to Lutheran Child and Family Services where it will be distributed to those in need.
