The 1924 session of the Calhoun County Farmers’ Institute, which was held in the school building at Hardin, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of last week, was pronounced a success from every point of view. The exhibits in the different departments were grand and the officers and committees in charge deserve credit for the tasteful displays. The attendance, although good, was not as large as it might have been. The Ladies Aid Society of the Hardin Presbyterian church served excellent meals for the occasion at a small cost, and they received many compliments for their service. W.P Flint, W.S. Brock, Mrs. Eva Wilson, and Wm. Rummel, all noted speakers, delivered addresses before the institute which were very good, and the only regret we have to offer is that we have neither time nor space to comment on these splendid talks.

All of Calhoun’s near-record crop of apples have been picked and most of them sold. Now the growers are figuring up the results of their labor. It was a heart-breaking year in many ways. Not only Calhoun had a good yield of high quality apples. The whole country overproduced this year. Naturally this situation forced down prices. However, few growers are faced with a severe loss and many of them have made a modest profit. The demand for Calhoun apples was heavy and steady all through the season, and while the price was low, there were always plenty of buyers, so that practically the whole crop was sold. This demand was caused and stimulated by publicity and the fame of Calhoun apples themselves.

A dozen interested people met on Tuesday to see if there could be the possibility of beginning a Calhoun Chamber of Commerce. Anita Rose, past president of Jersey County’s Chamber of Commerce, gave some helpful hints on how such an organization should get started. Rose was quick to say that she did not have all of the answers because every situation in every county is different. Quite frankly, Rose believes that the county needs to emphasize what it has, not what it does not have. Calhoun has some of the prettiest scenery in the Midwest, wonderful restaurants, friendly people, and close proximity to millions of people.
