Sergeant Dave Womack was sworn in as Interim Chief of Police with the Grafton Police Department Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the Grafton City Council meeting.
Grafton City Council accepted and announced the retirement of Police Chief Eric Spanton at the regular City Council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 19.
Chief Spanton has served the City of Grafton since 2017 after 28 years with the Illinois State Police and will work with Sergeant Dave Womack as he takes over as Interim Chief of Police.
“The community is grateful for his service and guidance during his term of office,” the city said in a press release. “Grafton has greatly benefited from his experience and leadership and the police department is on solid footing because of these attributes.”
The City Council accepted the resignation and thanked Chief Spanton for his service to the community before swearing in Sergeant Dave Womack as interim Chief of Police.
Sergeant Womack began his career in law enforcement in Missouri in 1989 and served 22 years as a deputy with the Jersey County Sheriff’s Office. After retiring from the Sheriff’s office Womack joined the Grafton Police Department in 2019.

Officer Daniel Meredith was sworn in as a Patrolman with the Grafton Police Department Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the Grafton City Council meeting.
Officer Daniel Meredith was also sworn in Tuesday night. He took his oath as Patrolman with the Grafton Police Department to support the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution of the State of Illinois, and to faithfully discharge his duties to the best of his abilities.
Mayor Mike Morrow said Officer Nathan Alderfer, from Greene County, will be moving back in the next few months and will join the Grafton Police Department full-time as well.
“Grafton is indeed fortunate to have such a deep talent and knowledge of law enforcement – past, present and future – from which to draw. We are proud of them all,” Mayor Morrow said.
