Jerseyville City Council approved an ordinance vacating a portion of Lovejoy Street last week during their regular council meeting.
During a brief public hearing on the ordinance, Attorney William Strang said the property is right next to Kansas City Southern Railway, now Canadian Pacific Kansas City, on one side of the street. On the other side of the street, the majority of the vacated portion would go to Curtiss Lee Johnson, as well as two other property owners.
“Ninety-five percent of it is adjacent to the Johnson property,” Strang said.
Strang said that if there are any city services inside of the vacated portion of Lovejoy those would be maintained, although he doesn’t believe there are.
With no other comments from the public or council during the public hearing, a motion for the ordinance was unanimously approved.
In other business, council reminded residents that dump stickers go on sale Monday, April 21. The cost for stickers is $175 and residents must bring proof of residency such as a current utility bill or driver’s license.
Council also asked the public to refrain from blowing grass clippings on public sidewalks and into the street as we get into mowing season.
“Not only can grass clippings present a hazard for pedestrians and bicycles, but grass clippings get washed down into storm drains and cloth the pipes and catch basins, which leads to street flooding,” Mayor Kevin Stork said.
A reminder was also issued for the Jerseyville Public Library Grand Opening Celebration from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 25, and from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 26.
