Jersey County residents can expect to see their voter registration cards in the mail by early June.
Jersey County Clerk Pam Warford announced in a press release that cards will be mailed to all active registered voters and asked that anyone who receives a card in error or needs to update their address to contact the Clerk’s office.
The full press release reads:
Jersey County Clerk Pam Warford has announced that Voter Registration Cards will soon be mailed to all active registered voters in the county. This mailing is done in each odd year, when there are fewer budgetary and time constraints than in even years, when there are two elections to run.
The purpose of the mailing is two-fold:
To verify a voter’s current and correct address. The postcard is sent by first class mail with return service requested from the post office. So, if they are not deliverable exactly as addressed, they should be returned to the County Clerk by the post office with additional information when available, such as whether the person’s mail is being forwarded to a different address or if the addressee has moved.
To provide the voter with valuable information such as a voter’s precinct and polling place and a list of the voting jurisdictions associated with their address. The cards can also be used for identification purposes. However, in Illinois, voters are not required to show this card at the polls. Identification is required in order to register to vote.
“If someone receives a card delivered to their address for a person who no longer lives there, we ask them to please notify our office as soon as possible,” Warford said. “Though we take advantage of state grants to help cover the cost of voter list maintenance, the cards are sent at a considerable cost. If the effort results in a “clean” voter list, then the expense has been worthwhile and money can be saved at election time, when we are preparing for an accurate number of voters.”
“If someone receives a card in error, if they move to a different address, or if they wish to cancel their voter registration, they should complete and sign the back of the card and return it to our office,” Warford said, noting that all contact information for the county clerk’s office is printed on the card.
Active registered voters should expect to see their cards in the mail in early June. Questions may be directed to the County Clerk’s office by phone or email, or voters may check the website at https:// jerseycountyclerk-il.gov for more information.
