The Jerseyville City Council approved a motion at the Tuesday, June 24, meeting for the 2025-2026 appropriations ordinance to be placed for public inspection and set a date for a public hearing.
The ordinance is currently available for public inspection and the public hearing will be held on Tuesday, July 22, at 5:45 p.m. at City Hall.
During a brief discussion, Tony Steckel said with City Hall renovations behind us and library renovations nearly behind us the apparitions went down nearly $8 million from last year.
“Insurance obviously is one that we had to raise a little bit there. The library still has some invoices coming in on that, and we’re also going to do some minor things on the two old buildings,” he said. “Then we also added the splash pad into the appropriations.”
Council also approved a motion to solicit bid proposals for a contract for exclusive residential waste, garbage, trash and yard waste collection, disposal and recycling services for the city.
Mayor Kevin Stork said this topic has come up previously and the city has tried different options but they’ve been unsuccessful. He said residents have been finding different prices based on routes and it seemed like something that needs to be explored further as a city.
“As a city I think we just need to explore the options to get recycling, see if we can save a little money for our residents,” Mayor Stork said. “When we do this we’re not looking to enact anything until our next fiscal year. So whatever decision we make, if we make a decision on this, it wouldn’t take effect until April 1, 2026.”
In other business, a motion was approved to reappoint Helen Gubser and Michelle Hopper to the Jerseyville Public Library Board of Trustees, and Derek Russell was announced as the newly appointed Director of Building and Zoning/Code Enforcement.
Mayor Stork said the appointment of Russell wasn’t official yet and was just an announcement with Jeff Soer’s retirement coming up.
“In preparation for that we had done an exhaustive search,” Stork said. “We did a long interview process. We interviewed quite a few people and ironically enough we were able to find a local guy that checked all the boxes for us.”
Before closing, it was also announced that the Tuesday, July 8, council meeting will be held at 5 p.m. due to the fair parade at 6 p.m., and the next Rock the Block will be held on Friday, July 18, at the City Center Plaza between Germania Brew Haus and Dairy Queen featuring Superjam.
