We enjoyed great weather last week, sunny and in mid-60’s and by Friday reached 73. It was nice yet on Saturday but by evening strong winds and dropping temperatures. Sunday morning wind anywhere from 35 to 40 MPH and only reached a high of 44 after a low of 27 degrees. Meteorologists now say a gradual warming trend throughout the week and up to 70 by the weekend. Never fails, hard frost kills veggies in the garden and all the flowers and then warms up again.
Congratulations to Jake and Delaney (Schulze) Schumacher of southern Illinois on the birth of their first child. A daughter, born on October 22, weighing 8 lbs. 5 ozs and has been given the name Nazareth Joy. Her grandfather is Clark Schulze, formerly of Golden Eagle.
Last week the America’s Best Restaurants van pulled up at the Illinois River Dock Restaurant in Hardin. They filmed the establishment, the employee’s, the preparation of food and finished product. They were quoted as saying “Had a great time filming at Mel’s RiverDock Restaurant, trying the delicious food and can’t wait for everyone to see the full episode on TV soon.” Hope the manager of the restaurant lets us know when it will be on television. This had to be quite an honor to be chosen by them. America’s Best Restaurants is a traveling show, primarily featured on its YouTube Channel, that highlights independent restaurants across the United States. The show’s goal is to promote these “hidden gems” by telling their stories, showcasing their signature dishes and giving exposure for the business.
My Illinois Country Living magazine arrived last week and featured on pages 28 and 29 is an article entitled “Wittmond’s Stands the Test of Time. A most interesting article by Jim Winnerman as he interviewed Charles Burch, telling of the history of the hotel, store and dining room. How it all began back in 1847 and up to the present time. Interesting article, complete with photos and great interview with Charles.
Craig and Tracy Huelsman, their son Lane all of Meppen and his friend Carl Kirn of Golden Eagle attended the Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Live event on Saturday at the Family Arena in St. Charles, MO. The event was called the “Glow-N-Fire” show, with the same level of fun and excitement fans expect but with an added fiery twist. I know Lane and Carl especially enjoyed it!
So great to see Dresden Schulte in church on Sunday. He is the son of Tony and Kelly Schulte of Golden Eagle. Dresden is with the U. S. Coast Guard, Station Fairport, near Mentor, OH. This station is responsible for Coast Guard operations on Lake Erie and the three states in its area of responsibility: Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York. Glad to hear he is now on 2 weeks’ leave with his family.
My visitor and helper on Saturday was my son John Carnes. Julie and Caleb spent the day with her dad Francis Toppmeyer. Guess I had forgotten how much work there is getting everything winterized, inside and out for the extremely cold winter weather ahead. John took care of the mowers, tractors, pick-up, the house next door and my house throughout the day. That evening we joined Julie, Caleb and her dad Francis for a delicious dinner. Stopping by for a visit was Bill and Joan Held who joined us for dessert. Francis and I wish to thank them for all their work while here for the day.
The Brussels Girl Scouts held their Annual Veteran’s Dinner on Saturday evening at St. Matthew Church Hall in Brussels. In attendance there were approximately 100 Veterans and their spouse, or guest. The girls and their leaders Debbie Kamp, Amanda Brodbeck and Diane Tepen prepared and served the turkey dinner with all the trimmings along with pumpkin pie for dessert. A patriotic program followed by the Girl Scouts and each Veteran was presented with a gift the girls had made. Thanks so much for this kind gesture each year.
Denise and Travis Scranton of Meppen hosted a Surprise 80th Birthday Party for her dad, Bernard Mager of Batchtown at their home over the weekend. They had invited him down for tacos and to open his gifts. Much to his surprise many family members and friends were present to help him celebrate. Many more happy ones Bernie!

Just a little information on Veteran’s Day. It originated as Armistice Day in 1919 to commemorate the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. It became a legal holiday in 1938 and in 1954, after WWII and the Korean War, Congress amended the act to change its name to Veterans Day to honor all American Veterans, not just those of World War I. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the legislation into law.

Dear Lord, we pray that our simple thanks to our Veterans be a reminder that our freedom is not free, it is purchased at a high cost and should never be forgotten. We also pray dear Lord this nation turns back to You and we pray You save this land from those who seek to destroy it. For each and every Veteran who has served our country through the years, we thank You for their sacrifice. Amen
