Weather in this area is still changeable, making it hard to know what to wear from one day to the next. At least it stayed above freezing and by end of week up to 49. This week meteorologists are predicting a few days of temperatures in the 50’s, then back down in mid 40’s with possibility of rain for Friday and the weekend. And then today I saw a post on Facebook that in four weeks, March 8, at 2 a.m. it’s time to turn the clocks forward an hour. It seems to take forever to get our bodies accustomed to the time change and I did read recently that it takes a toll on our body in both the spring and the fall when this happens.
Congratulations to Eric Kallal, Funeral Director for Gress, Kallal and Schaff, who retired recently. Sounds like his family went all out, rented a stretch limousine and took him out to celebrate. A well-deserved evening for him to party after 39 years as funeral director. Wishing you the best Eric, I’m sure Lisa has a long list of things for you to do and places she wants to travel.
John, Julie and Caleb Carnes of Edwardsville spent Saturday in the area. Julie and Caleb visited and helped her dad, Francis Toppmeyer and John helped me and visited at my house. My list of things needing attention was a bit long this time so I kept him busy. Can’t thank him enough for all he accomplished and I’m sure Francis feels the same way. After church that evening John and I joined them and had a delicious dinner the Carnes family brought with them, along with warm homemade peach cobbler Julie had made and ice cream. Thanks again to all of them.
It sounded like the Brussels Girl Scouts Father Daughter evening turned out great on Saturday evening. The event was held at the Brussels Legion Hall and included a wonderful dinner, dancing, photo taking and other activities. Many thanks to the leaders and scouts for hosting this event each year.
Kinder’s Restaurant in Golden Eagle hosted a Super Bowl Party on Sunday afternoon and evening. Everyone in attendance enjoyed the complimentary chili, along with lots of appetizers and dips that those in attendance brought.
St. Mary’s School Benefit will be on Saturday, Feb. 21, from 11 a.m. to 8 pm.. The chicken dinner will be held from 4:30 until 8 PM on Saturday, drive thru, carry out or dine in. There will be a silent auction, grand raffle, card draws and drop basket raffle. On Sunday the event continues from Noon until 5 p.m.
Now that Brussels and Golden Eagle ferries are out in this area there are not many traveling the extra miles around to attend a movie or other entertainment. The men and women working outside the county get in enough extra driving during the week.

Since this coming Saturday is Valentine’s Day my prayer is for that Special Day.
Dear Lord, on this day of love and affection, we come before You with grateful hearts. The love we need more than anything is Your love, without it no other love will ever be sufficient. We have learned all our best loves from You; the love of our parents, siblings and children, faithful friends and significant others. On this day let everything we see remind us of Your love. Finally, Lord, we thank You for the ultimate expression of Your love, the sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross. May we always remember the depth of Your love for us and live our lives in gratitude and obedience to you. Amen
