February quickly passed, ushering in March with notable shifts in weather, ranging from chilly lows to unseasonably warm highs. This week predictions are for temperatures from 45 degrees today to Friday in the upper 70’s with rain every day.
A Country Financial dinner meeting was held on Tuesday evening at the Riverdock Restaurant in Hardin. Doug Yoder, Crop Agency Manager of Bloomington featured a slide presentation on crop insurance changes and improvements. Among those from South Calhoun in attendance were Adam Herter, Kent and Brent Schulze, Paul and Jeanette Droege, Matt Meyer, Donnie and Dylan Droege, Jeremy Pohlman, Mitchell Willman, David and Janet Droege, Yvonne Baecht and I. Many thanks to Lindsey Franke, Jane Brangenberg, Dan Eberlin and Patricia Johnes for hosting the event.
On Tuesday Vera Droege asked Yvonne Baecht and me to accompany her to Carrollton. We enjoyed our time spent at the quilt supply room at the Pharmacy Plus store. So many quilt blocks, embroidery thread and other supplies they have on hand for purchase. We returned home through Jerseyville and had a great lunch at the Red Bird Café. Thanks Vera, we really enjoyed the day.
Donnie Droege and Brad Wallendorf were recently honored for their long tenures at Millstone/Weber Contractors during an award ceremony and banquet on Saturday evening at the Ameristar Casino in St. Charles, MO. Donnie received an award for his 15 years with the company and Brad Wallendorf for 40 years. Congratulations to both of them. Donnie’s wife Jessica was also in attendance.
Congratulations to the Calhoun Warriors Boys Basketball Team who won the Regional Championship game over Pawnee last Friday evening with a score of 63-61.
My daughter Cyndi Axford of Chesterfield, MO was my visitor and helper on Friday. Many thanks to her for vacuuming, dusting, etc. and then treating me to a fish dinner at Wittmond’s that afternoon. Upon our return home she finished a few other jobs I needed done and we had an enjoyable visit before she returned home that evening.
Condolences are extended to the families of three U.S. service members killed in the recent strikes against Iran, as well as prayers for the 5 or more seriously injured and their families.
My son John Carnes of Edwardsville spent Saturday with me and working outdoors cleaning gutters, picking up limbs down from recent winds and various other jobs I had on my list. That evening he and I along with Yvonne Baecht attended the Calhoun County Farm Bureau dinner and meeting in Hardin.
The 105th Annual Dinner and Meeting of the Calhoun County Farm Bureau Member Appreciation event was held on Saturday evening at the Calhoun High School in Hardin and well attended. After the delicious family style meal the meeting was held. President Ben Van Dyne called the meeting to order. Secretary Wayne Fuhler and Treasurer Jeremy Pohlman gave their reports. Speakers were IAA District 15 Director, Steve Koeller and State Representative C.D. Davidsmeyer. This was followed by reports from the Manager Jane Brangenberg, Tri-County FS Report by Silas Owens, Jersey Co. Grain Report by Bryce Baker and FFA President Report by Carlee Sievers. The program included a photo of Robert “Bob” Snyders, a Board Member for Calhoun Farm Bureau for 21 years that had past away last year. Drawing for various prizes was held and adjournment followed. Many thanks to everyone for the delicious meal and interesting meeting that followed. It was great to see and talk to friends we hadn’t seen in a while, Tom Schulze, Larry Heffington, Joyce Simon and several others.
Mary Ann Tepen of Meppen passed away on February 18 at Evercare of Calhoun in Hardin. Visitation was on Thursday evening and funeral on Friday at St. Joseph Church in Meppen. She was preceded in death by her parents Edwin and Emma (Kamp) Flanigan and her husband of 58 years Norbert Tepen. Survivors include a son Edwin (Christine) Tepen and two grandchildren Amanda Tepen (Robert Gould) and Adam Tepen as well as a special cousin Barb (Larry) Pohlman.
A Celebration of Life for Julie Pohlman was held at the Grafton Legion Hall on Saturday, Feb. 28 for family members and friends. Deepest sympathy to her husband Fred Pohlman II, sons Fred Pohlman III, Sam Pohlman and Luke Pohlman and their families.
Everyone is reminded to set their clocks ahead one hour before going to bed on Saturday night. Daylight Savings Time begins on March 7. Now for our body to get accustomed to it. A recent health post stated you may feel moody, groggy or craving more sugar. The time change can also cause biological stress, throwing off your sleep, hormones and metabolism. It can also cause fatigue, reduced alertness and changes in appetite. Scientists believe these effects can last up to two weeks.
Upcoming events include the Calhoun Entertainment Company’s production of “ANNIE,” running March 26-29 at the Center for American Archeology, in Kampsville, IL. March 26-28 the play begins at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, March 29 a matinee at 2 p.m.. Tickets for the show are available at local banks, Northside Family Foods, and Hardin Package Liquor.
Game Day hosted by the Sons of the American Legion at the Brussels Legion Hall on Sunday, March 15. Doors open at noon with food available for purchase and games starting at 1 p.m.

Happy Anniversary to my son-in-law and daughter Dennis and Shelly Scherer of Wright City, MO also Jim and Carol Kiel, Keith and Becky Baecht, Chad and Melissa Nolte and all other couples celebrating their wedding anniversary this week.
With all the turmoil going on in the world at this time my prayer is for our Armed Forces.
Lamb of God, who laid down His life for us, be with those who serve in the various branches of our armed forces. They choose to serve, knowing that they may be putting their own lives at risk to defend our great country. Guide them, protect them and provide them with good leaders. Give all service members divine protection, strength and wisdom for all of them facing danger, while requesting comfort for their families and a safe return home. In Jesus’ name, Amen
