After spending nearly three years in Greene County Jail awaiting trial, a Greene County man will spend the next 35 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after being found guilty of a Class X felony in Greene County Circuit Court.
Greene County States Attorney Craig M. Grummel said that Michael D. Moran, 57, has been sentenced to 35 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after being found guilty of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child, a Class X felony and one of the most serious criminal offenses under Illinois law.
Moran was found guilty by the court on January 12 for an incident/incidents that occurred in May of 2023 in Greene County involving a child under the age of 13. Evidence presented to the court established that Moran committed sexual contact with the minor for the purpose of sexual gratification.
Moran was sentenced to 35 years in the DOC on March 10. The Court also imposed a $5,000 fine. Moran was given credit for 1,027 days served in custody while awaiting trial.
Under Illinois truth-in-sentencing law applicable to this offense, Moran will be required to serve at least 85 percent of the sentence imposed before becoming eligible for release.
Although Moran’s criminal history is not extensive, the Court determined that the severity of the crime and the need to protect children in Greene County required a significant prison sentence.
Grummel said crimes involving the sexual exploitation of children are among the most serious offenses prosecuted in Greene County and sentences of this nature serve as an important deterrent to those who would harm children.
“This sentence reflects the seriousness of the crime and our commitment to protecting the children of Greene County,” he said. “No child should ever have to endure this type of abuse. Today is a day where the victim was able to take back control and I commend her courage and toughness throughout this difficult process.”
Grummel also expressed appreciation to the agencies and individuals who assisted in the investigation and prosecution of the case, including the Greenfield Police Department, the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, the Unified Child Advocacy Network and Prairie Center Against Sexual Assault.
He also recognized the work of John Goode, former Chief of the Greenfield Police Department and current Chief of Police in Carrollton for his role during the investigation.
A special thank you was also extended to Special Assistant Attorney Kathleen Nolan of the Illinois State’s Attorney’s Appellate Prosecutor’s Office for her professional assistance in prosecuting the case.
“Our office will continue to work closely with law enforcement and victim advocacy organizations to ensure that crimes against children are thoroughly investigated and vigorously prosecuted,” Grummel said.
