Alice L. Ghrist, age 101, of Pittsfield, IL, passed away Friday, June 19, 2026, at Pittsfield Manor in Pittsfield, IL. She was born Feb. 12, 1925, in Greene County, IL to Louis Portwood and Lucy M. Graner Loy. Alice married Donald W. Ghrist Aug. 3, 1947, in Palmyra, MO and he preceded her in death June 2, 1986.
Alice graduated from Shipman High School in Shipman, IL. She worked for the government during rationing and later moved to Pike County where she met her husband and raised her family. Alice was a member of several card clubs and was very competitive while playing pitch and pinochle. She also liked crossword puzzles, planting flowers in the spring, and creating cross stitch quilts. Alice was a wonderful cook who fed many people over the years and always enjoyed feeding her grandchildren lunch when they were home. She was well known for her delicious fried chicken and her Texas sheet cake was go to for church dinners. Alice attended First Christian Church and was a member of Home Extension, Women’s Club, Women of the Moose, and American Legion auxiliary. She was stubborn and feisty lady who will be dearly missed by friends and family.
Alice is survived by daughters, Karen L. (Roger) Fox of Pittsfield, IL and Deborah S. (Robert Goby) Ghrist of Springfield, IL; grandchildren, Brian Fox, Bradley (Stephanie) Fox, Adam (Tracie) Ghrist, Joseph (Taryn Bell) Ghrist, Aubrie (Bryan) Hubbert, Sam (Lexy) Ghrist and bonus granddaughter, Shaun Kelly; great grandchildren, Reid Fox, Rowdy Fox, Daisy Fox, McKenna Ghrist, Brooklynn Ghrist, Abram Ghrist, Ronni Hubbert, Cori Hubbert, Briggs Hubbert, Harvey Ghrist, and another on the way; and sister, Dorothy Schmidt.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Lucy Loy; husband, Donald Ghrist; sons, Donald L. Ghrist and Ronald W. Ghrist; daughter-in-law, Becky Ghrist; and siblings, Woodrow Loy, Gertrude Parnell, Mary Price, and Harry Loy.
Funeral service will be held at 12 p.m., Friday, June 26, 2026, at Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield, IL with visitation held prior to the service from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Interment will follow the service at West Cemetery in Pittsfield, IL. Memorials are suggested to be made to First Christian Church, Blessing Hospice or every.little.thing. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com.
