A Greene County man will be spending the next four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Greene County States Attorney Craig M. Grummel announced that Clarence F. Smith, 67, has been sentenced to four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to the Class 4 felony before Judge Zachary Schmidt on June 3.
On July 6, Judge Schmidt announced the four year sentence on July 6 in Greene County Circuit Court and recommended he participate in the Department’s substance abuse treatment program.
The conviction stemmed from an incident that occurred on June 25, 2025 in Greene County in which Smith knowingly possessed less than 15 grams of a substance containing fentanyl.
Grummel thanked the White Hall Police Department for its investigation and continued commitment to combating the illegal possession and distribution of dangerous controlled substances in Greene County.
“Fentanyl continues to pose one of the greatest threats to the safety of our communities,” Grummel said. “Every successful prosecution involving this deadly drug helps protect our citizens and sends a clear message that those who possess illegal narcotics will be held accountable under Illinois law.”
Grummel said his office remains committed to working with local law enforcement agencies to aggressively prosecute drug offenses and promote the safety of Greene County residents.
