Alton looks at extending Republic Waste contract

A resolution was introduced to the Alton City Council to extend the city’s existing contract with Republic Waste Services.

The current contract expires on September 30, 2026, but the proposed resolution would push this expiration to March 31, 2027.

Delaying the expiration of this contract aligns the start date of any new contact with the start of a new fiscal year. Additionally, this creates an opportunity to review how we provide trash services to residents, how it is billed, and who provides this service.

Currently, the City of Alton bills for and collects payments for trash services. Each residential property is billed $60 every two months that covers $29 for trash and $1 admin for each month. As per the City Code, this is billed two months in arrears. Our contract with Republic Waste Services stipulates that we pay them monthly, in advance, based on the number of properties they service in Alton.

No changes to the current agreement are being made under this extension. All rates and services will remain the same.

Extending the city’s contract until March 2027 is a short-term solution to align the contract with the fiscal year and allow further time to review our trash services.

This resolution will be discussed by the Council at the Committee of the Whole meeting scheduled for August 10, 2026.
