Robert Samuel Cross, 96 of Quincy and formerly of New Canton passed away Friday, Sept. 5, 2025 at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy.He was born Jan. 3, 1929 in Kansas City, Missouri the son of George and Clara Hankin Cross. Robert served his country in the US Army as part of the 937th Engineers Aviation Group at Orlando Airforce Base. Upon completion of his service, he returned to commercial fishing with his father and continued fishing on the Illinois and Mississippi rivers through his working career. He was known to be an honest hardworking man. He loved to garden, enjoyed watermelon, strawberry ice cream and found joy in simple things such as dogs and little children.
He married Marjorie Mayfield on Oct. 14, 1965 in Springfield, Illinois and she survives at home. Also surviving is his son Larry (Jocelyn) Reever of Canton, Missouri. Eight grandchildren: Robert E. Reever, Amy (Roger) Hutchinson, April Gibbons, Autumn Mike) Reeves, Joseph Nelson, Alex Guilfoy, Zachary Reever and Justin Reever; nine great grandchildren: Joshua Reever, Emily Finnell, Madison Finnell, Mason Beahan, Jeremy Beahan, Kenady Debary, Mia Hutchinson, Wyatt Reeves and Jason Geisendorfer.
Preceding him in death were his parents; siblings: George, Hugh, Fred and Roberta Cross; son, Kenneth Reever and daughter, Carolyn Gilfoy.
A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2025 in the Griggsville Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy. The Airsman-Hires Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
