Denton Lee Coonrod, age 94, of Winchester, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Oct. 29, 2025.He was the son of Dwight and Leona Coonrod of White Hall and is survived by Marjorie Ann Coonrod, his wife of 74 years; sons, John (Sue) of Winchester, Illinois, Barry (Terry) of Winchester, Illinois and David (Gina) of Springfield, Illinois; grandchildren, John Paul Coonrod, Thomas Denton Coonrod, Breanna Raube, Derrick Coonrod, Lyndsey Coonrod, Lecie Brannan and Brian Hart; as well as nine great-grandchildren, Mary Hall, Morgan Hall, Andrew Brannan, John Avery Coonrod, Michael Bodhi Coonrod, Emy Coonrod, Josie Coonrod, Zoe Raube and Nora Raube. His sister, Toby Shugart of Florida also survives.He was predeceased by one grandchild, Brandon Coonrod; sister, Jeane Moulton (surviving husband Fred of White Hall; brothers, Donald and Damon Coonrod and Eugene in infancy.
He proudly served his country in Korea in the U.S. Army Signal Corp. After his tour of duty he was shipwrecked in the Pacific on his way home. After returning home to his family he began his career as a funeral director, eventually purchasing the current Coonrod Funeral Home which he and Margie operated for thirty-four years. He served his community as a Winchester City councilman, Scott County Coroner and Scott County Commissioner. He was a longtime member of the Winchester Volunteer Fire Department and a founder of the Winchester EMT, providing that service with their first ambulance. He was an active longtime member of the Winchester American Legion, serving as post commander; Winchester Economic Development Corporation, serving as president; Winchester Kiwanis Club also serving as president; I00F lodge, serving in many capacities and was a longtime Mason. He was also a seventy-year member of the Winchester First Baptist Church, serving as a trustee for many years.
He was devoted to his family, his profession, his community and his country. Services was held at First Baptist Church in Winchester on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025 at 11 a.m. Burial was at Winchester City Cemetery where military honors will be conducted. Visitation was held on Friday, Oct. 31, 2025 from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester. Memorial contributions can be made to the Scott County Nursing Center or to the First Baptist Church.
