City of Alton approves Wayfinding proposal

The Alton City Council voted to approve an Alton Wayfinding proposal.

This proposal will enable the City of Alton to work with RVi Planning + Landscape Architecture to add signs directing people
to and identifying key locations throughout the city.

The proposed project will be funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The total contract is
$38,500.

Locations for signs across the City of Alton, not just downtown, have been presented to RVi. The
wayfinding proposal aims to prioritize the installation of signs at locations that have the greatest
impact first. The proposal will provide a phased approach for implementing wayfinding signage in
Alton, establishing a framework for future sign installations as funding becomes available.

RVi will use guidance the city provided to begin their work, but final sign locations will be based on a
combination of RVi’s professional review, collaboration with staff, and public engagement.

RVi is also working with the city on its Great Streets Initiative. The city believes that continued
collaboration with RVi on the wayfinding project will promote design cohesion throughout the city
as efforts continue to revitalize Alton’s economy.

The proposed wayfinding strategy will improve navigation throughout Alton while also directing
community members and tourists to major economic, cultural, and recreational locations. The City of
Alton feels that this project will strengthen the economy, tourism industry, and cultural identity of
the community.
