Nona Balke Simon, 89, of Jacksonville, IL died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2022 at Heritage Health in Jacksonville, IL.
She was born Dec. 3, 1932, in Salt Springs, IL, Calhoun County, to the late Carl and Freda (Blackwell) Squier.
She married Bernard (Barney) H. Balke on June 21, 1951, in Hardin. He preceded her in death on Nov. 10, 1988. They had seven children: Kathy (Dane) Selby of St. Augustine, FL, Karen “Susie” (Mark) Hopkins of Jacksonville, Mary Beth Mullen (Dave Stoker) of Murrayville, Annette Balke (deceased), Ben (Andrea) Balke of Palm Coast, FL, Steve (Meg) Balke of St. Johns, FL, and Theresa Hance of Jacksonville; 17 grandkids: Missy (Benji) Miles of Jacksonville, FL, Mick (Vicki) Selby of Jacksonville, Matt (Mary Ann) Selby of St. Augustine, FL, Eric (Jen) Culbertson, of Waverly, Amy (Chad) McDannald of Franklin, Jared Culbertson of New Berlin, Jody (Justin) Hammers of Jacksonville, Jenny Mullen of Jacksonville, Jessica Mullen of Springfield, Jake Mullen of Jacksonville, Justin (Emily) Balke of Lakeland, FL, Bradley Balke of Jacksonville, FL, Anna Morgan of Jacksonville, FL, Robbie Balke of St. Johns, FL, Casey Hance of Springfield, Blake (Mary) Hance of San Francisco, CA, and Megan Hance of Springfield; 27 great grandkids: Selby Miles, Gavin Miles, Beau Miles, Mallory Selby, Morgan Selby, Jhon Olivar, Sam Olivar, Matthew Selby Jr. (deceased), Marcus Selby, Lucas Selby, Jon (Lizzy) Culbertson, Brayden Culbertson, Ashlynn Culbertson, Katie Logue, Bailey Logue, Elaina Warcup, Carson Ward, Avery Culbertson, Hayden Culbertson, Justice Hammers, Jadyn Hammers, Jordyn Hammers, Jozie Miller, Jace Lautemann, Jenna Mullen, Kalli Mullen, and Carrick Wells; one great-great granddaughter, Stevie Culbertson; and two sisters, Cheryl Cagle (Lee Nolan) of Jacksonville and Peg (Frank) Godar of Hardin. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews.
On March 15, 2003, she married Karl Simon and he preceded her in death on July 28, 2022.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, her daughter
and grandson as well as two brothers, Lavern Blackwell and Alvin Squier.
When living in Hardin, Nona worked at the Farm Service Agency office.
Upon moving to Jacksonville, she worked in the accounting department for Carps which then became Mohr Value and then went on to become Walmart. After retiring from Walmart she worked at AACO for several years.
Graveside rites will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, 2022, at Calvary Cemetery in Jacksonville. The family also invites family and friends to join them in a celebration of life gathering 3 to 5 p.m. at Hamilton’s 110 in the Fireside room following the graveside service.
Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or PAWS of Jacksonville. The Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville is in charge of the services. Condolences may be left at buchanancody.com.
