Walter ‘Jerry’ Meyer | 75 | Grafton
Walter “Jerry” Meyer of Grafton, 75, passed away July 2, 2023, surrounded by his family at his residence, after losing his battle to pancreatic cancer.
Jerry was born in Carrollton, IL Sept. 7, 1947 the second of nine children of Walter and Vera (Hirst) Meyer (Vetter).
Jerry graduated from Calhoun High School in 1965. He worked for The Illinois Department of Corrections and retired in 2012. Jerry married Peggy Boes on Aug. 4, 1973 and they shared almost 50 years of marriage together. Jerry and Peggy had four children, Michelle, Carrie, Jeremy and Christopher. Jerry lived most of his adult life in Carrollton, where he raised his family. Jerry was a faithful Catholic and member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville, IL. Throughout his life he donated more than 13 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. Jerry enjoyed being outdoors, taking walks, running daily, maintaining his property, planting trees, taking care of his pollinator field, hunting, NASCAR races, and most of all his family. His greatest joy in life was his wife Peggy and his children and grandchildren. He worked hard to provide for his family, he was very proud of the home that he and Peggy built together in Grafton after he retired.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Peggy Meyer of Grafton, IL; his two daughters, Michelle (Andy) Baecht of Grafton, IL and Carrie (Nathan) Heineman of Elsah, IL; and son, Christopher of Cary, NC.; and grandchildren, Hailey and Jeremy Heineman. He is also survived by his siblings; John (Luretta) Meyer of Brighton, IL, Mary Gerecke of Bunker Hill, IL, Martha (Rick Demers) Meyer of Merritt Island, FL, Virginia (Gary) Heichelbech of St. Peters, MO, Fred Meyer of St. Peters, MO, Joanne (Carl) Kiel of Brussels, IL, Carolyn Dahlen of Edina, MN.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his son, Jeremy Meyer; parents, Walter C. Meyer and Vera L. Vetter; a sister, Margaret Ann Meyer; and numerous aunts and uncles, nieces, and a brother-in-law.
A Funeral Mass will be held 9 a.m. Saturday , July 8, 2023, at St. Frances Catholic Church in Jerseyville, IL. Jerry will be laid to rest at St. John’s Cemetery in Carrollton, next to his son, Jeremy Meyer. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 7, 2023, at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton, IL where a prayer service will be conducted at 4:45 p.m. prior to visitation.
