Verma Lee ‘Susie’ Carlton | 101 | Winchester

Verma Lee “Susie” Carlton, 101 of Winchester passed away, Thursday, Aug. 24, 2023, in Pittsfield. She was born July 11, 1922 in Jacksonville the daughter of Alfred “Al” and Cassie Souza. She married John Dyer Carlton in 1942 in Big Springs, Texas. He preceded her in death in January 1993.
Surviving is her daughter, Patricia Sue (Ed) Frost of Winchester; grandchildren, April Frost of Colorado Springs, CO and Charles “Chuck” (Debbie) Frost of Winchester; great granddaughter, Allyson Raine (Janson) Shehorn of Springfield; and step great grandchildren, Shane (Meggan) Moore of Winchester, Vinnie Hines and Gianna Hines; a nephew Gerald (Lorna) Day of Jacksonville; and several great nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband; and sister, Erma Day.
Verma Lee graduated from Jacksonville High School class of “1939,” a life member of the Passavant Auxiliary, member at large of the Jollys Home Extension group, Farm Bureau, former member of Northminster Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville, and member of First Christian Church of Winchester. She was active in various ways in the Christian Church, taught Sunday School, worked with C.W.F., sang in the choir and helped deliver Bread of Love Meals. She did enjoy the foursome “Bible Study Group” with her special friends. Getting to visit the southwest was special to her as was a trip with Portuguese family and friends to the Isle of Maderia and a family celebration to Hawaii.
A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023 at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester. A visitation was held on Tuesday, Aug. 29 from 4 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial followed at Winchester City Cemetery.
